Tax jurisdictions are based on the customer's address. To ensure the the taxing engine is using the proper tax jurisdiction, the system validates the customer's address before assigning a tax jurisdiction.
The IDI platform offers three methods of Address Validation for taxing purposes.
CoreLogic, an IDI Billing Solutions partner, uses a high-precision geocoding and spatial analytic technology integrated with street, municipality, township, and nationwide tax databases to provide codes for Tax Management to assign the tax jurisdiction. Enhanced address validation helps you comply with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reporting requirements, and ensure taxes are properly applied based on the service address.
Notes:
This method is available if your company is licensed to use Enhanced Address Validation.
There may be additional charges associated with using CoreLogic. For more information on using CoreLogic, contact your Account Manager.
USPS address validation uses the USPS AMS API which checks addresses against data tables maintained by the USPS. During validation the AMS API corrects errors in street addresses such as abbreviations and missing information, and fills in the ZIP Code, including the Zip Code + 4, if missing, and county. The AMS API software and accompanying data tables must be updated periodically. Updates are installed by IDI as needed..
Basic address validation checks contact addresses against a ZIP Code table which is imported into the IDI platform via the Tax Management Zip Code Maintenance application. This method checks for valid city, state and ZIP Code combinations, and fills in the county for tax purposes. There is no automated error correction with this method. Addresses that fail validation must be corrected manually. This method is available to all IDI customers. Basic address validation does not require any configuration.
Bulk Address Validation is used when it is necessary to validate a large number of addresses for the first time, or when it is necessary to re-validate a number of addresses that are affected by a tax district change.
Note
Service addresses (not Service Contact addresses) may be validated against the Master Street Address Guide (MSAG) table to ensure that addresses submitted to E911 providers are correct. Set-up requirements for MSAG validation are described in MSAG Processing.
