A customer must be out of collections in order to exempt them. To exempt, click the Make Collections Exempt icon: 
You’ll be prompted to confirm the action. After confirming the customer will be flagged as collections-exempt as shown below.
When a customer is exempt, a badge indicating this is shown at the top of the Collections page.
