Every customer can be affiliated with a market (formerly called billing group). A customer's market is displayed in the customer summary tab.
The market parameter facilitates the following to address market-based customer segmentation business requirements:

Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

Reporting, and
-
GL/Finance Applications
Market is a value that, when applied to an account, can represent a geographical region (such as state) or a brand (such as carrier vs agent) or a combination of both of these.
User limit-to permissions are assigned to control who can access customers in certain markets.

So, for example, if a user only has access to Market "A," and not Market B, only customers from Market A will be visible.

This also means that certain searches or report results will only show customers who belong to Market A.
