Managing Sales Channels

Prev Next

A sales channel is a hierarchical grouping of sales entities (organizations, people, and channel partners) within a sales organization. This is used to identify the entity responsible for the sale to the customer, and who is credited with the commission when applicable. A channel partner is a subordinate organization associated with the main (parent) sales organization.

All orders entered in Customer Management, including the order for a new customer, must be associated with a sales channel; therefore, the sales channel must exist before any new customers can be added. Sales Channel is optional for web-based transactions entered via the Orders web module.

If you have the appropriate permissions, you can add, edit, move and delete sales entities using the Sales Channels application.

To access this functionality, from the Applications menu, select Customer Management > Sales Channels. This displays the Sales Channel Management form.

The Sales Matches dialog is displayed when you perform a partial search by entering serach criteria. By default this search filters out channels with an end date that precedes the current date (today). You can choose to include end-dated channels in the results by selecting the Show Inactive check box. Note: When you choose to show inactive channels, the dialog will permit you to select and use them, as you are making a conscious decision to display them. This is the only method by which you can select and use inactive channels.

The Sales Tree dialog is displayed when you perform a search without using any limiting criteria. In this case any channels with an end date that precedes the current date are grayed out, italicized, and labeled as Inactive. If you select an inactive sales channel, the OK button is disabled to prevent you from using an inactive channel.

Inactive channels are displayed here because they can have active children beneath them, and the expand/collapse functionality to view children within a hierarchy requires these inactive entities to still be displayed (even though they will not be selectable).

The following icons represent the three types of sales entities:

This icon represents a Channel Partner sales entity.

The context menu (right click in the left pane tree view) lets you

  • Add a new sales entity (except channel partners)

  • Edit an existing sales entity - Basically the same dialog as adding a sales entity

  • Add a new entity as a child of an existing entity - Basically the same dialog as adding a sales entity, except that the new entity is added as a child of the selected parent entity.

  • Move an entity within the tree view (cut and paste)

  • Delete an existing sales entity
