As the telecommunications industry continues to grow, so does the need for phone numbers. The most in demand are basic phone numbers (your typical phone number) and payphone. This need for more phone numbers is the reason for the introduction of additional NPAs into an area that is providing local and long distance phone service. This allows for as many new phone numbers as the NPANXX combination can support.
There are three possible scenarios in which the NPANXX Split function can or will affect a service number and/or billing number:
Only the service number is affected by the split
Only the billing number is affected by the split
Both the service number and the billing number are affected by the split

In the case of 800 numbers, the DPN changes, not the service or billing number.
The split function uses the Area Code Split Exchange Diskette (Item No. ACDS, or ACDQ, or ACDH. Media: D) that you purchase from Telcordia (Traffic Routing Administration). The ACSED is updated quarterly, in its entirety, to reflect added splits and any changes to previously reported information. You will need to copy the contents of this diskette into a location for later use. Each file on the diskette represents an NPA “split” and is named mmyyxold.new where:
mmyy=month, year of product
x=split status code where P=in progress, F=future, and C=completed (based on the product date)
old=old NPA
new=new NPA
For example, a file named 1299P614.740 translates to 12/99, in progress splits, old NPA is 614, new NPA is 740.

If your company is an IDI SaaS customer, your Billing Specialist performs the NPANXX split.
Importing NPANXX Split Information
The IDI platform uses its Background Processes Service to import the NPANXX Split information and to make the changes to the appropriate service numbers.
The process starts as soon as the file is placed in the appropriate import folder in the eFramNET directory of the server: InfoDirections\eFrameNET\Environments\environmentName\serverName_BackgroundProcess\NpaNxx Split\In. The Background Processes Service processes the file, adding and updating records in the NPANXX table and the affected service numbers. After a file is processed, it is moved into a \Done folder. A log file in the \Error folder contain status and error messages that the administrator can use to trouble-shoot the process, if necessary.
An order is created for each number that is changed to create a history of changes.
